    Young Investigator InitiativeA Grant Mentoring and Career Development ProgramThe Fall Workshop that was scheduled for September 2023 in now being consolidated with the Spring 2024 workshop April 12-14, 2024 in Rosemont Illinois. Application deadline is March 1, 2024. The Young Investigator Initiative is a grant mentoring and career development program that aims to increase the pipeline of clinician and basic scientists undertaking musculoskeletal research studies. The purpose of our Young Investigator Initiative program is to provide experienced and supportive mentoring in how to construct a well-founded research proposal and secure funding for basic, translational or clinical research. The program has engaged over 484 participants of which more than half have obtained grant funding totaling over $572 million for 1,918 new musculoskeletal research studies. To better enable clinical research in the musculoskeletal diseases performed by young investigators to keep pace with the increasing burden of these diseases the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) and Bone and Joint Canada (BJC) offer this multi-disciplinary program consisting of workshops and mentoring to provide early-career clinical investigators an opportunity to work with and to experienced researchers to assist them in securing funding. The unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for attendees to maintain a relationship with a mentor until their application is funded. A benefit of participation is the inter-disciplinary exchange of knowledge that takes place and understanding of the importance of collaborations. As a multi-disciplinary program many musculoskeletal diseases are the object of participants’ proposed research. The most prevalent musculoskeletal diseases are those most commonly addressed. Participants represent most specialties and allied health professionals investigating musculoskeletal disorders. Participants obtain funding from a variety of funding agencies and organizations. The YII provides opportunities to investigators who will become thought-leaders in their discipline, working on innovations to improve care.
